The Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, has installed a solar power system to provide uninterrupted electricity supply for students and staff of the unit.

The Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, has installed a solar power system to provide uninterrupted electricity supply for students and staff of the unit.

Commissioning the project, which is powered by 15-kilowatt lithium batteries, the Vice Chancellor of IAUE, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, commended the Director of IDL, Professor Kointein Trinya, for the initiative aimed at ensuring steady power for academic purposes. He noted that the renewable energy solution will significantly reduce electricity bills, lower operational costs, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance energy self-sufficiency within the institute.

Professor Onuchuku described the solar installation as a sustainable and inexhaustible source of energy that will reduce dependence on fossil fuels. He urged other faculties, departments, and institutes within the University to adopt similar renewable energy solutions. The Vice Chancellor also disclosed that the Faculty of Social Sciences, under its Dean, Professor Hyginus Bariziga Oku, is set to launch its own solar project by October 2025, while a proposal has been submitted to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for additional solar installations to meet the energy needs of students in the region.

In his remarks, Professor Kointein Trinya, Director of IDL, expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for his support in making the independent power project a reality.

Public Relations Officer of IAUE, Dr. Ngozi Okiridu, highlighted that the initiative reflects the University’s commitment to creating a conducive learning environment. She further explained that the Institute of Distance Learning provides flexible study opportunities for professionals, housewives, and individuals in remote areas, enabling them to pursue academic programmes at their own pace without necessarily attending regular face-to-face classes.
