KHAIRUN Hosts Kano Youth Peace Summit 2.0, VC Calls for Responsible Engagement Beyond Hate Speech and Fake News
Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University, Kano (KHAIRUN), on Tuesday, 3rd February, 2026, hosted the Kano Youth Peace Summit 2.0, a high-level engagement aimed at promoting peace and social cohesion through the fight against hate speech, fake news and other social vices. The summit was organized by the Nigeria Police Force, Kano State Command, in partnership with YOSPIS and AMG Foundation.
The Vice-Chancellor of KHAIRUN, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba, who was invited as a special guest at the occasion, delivered a keynote address in which he gave a brief history of the university and highlighted its academic programmes, noting that they are firmly built on the enduring legacy and vision of the founder, the late Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu. He emphasized the institution’s commitment to character development, moral values and societal transformation alongside academic excellence.
Speaking further, the Vice-Chancellor cautioned participants against focusing solely on words, noting that the impact of misinformation and hate is often amplified through images and digital content. He urged youths to resist lies and misinformation circulating on the internet, advising that issues of peace and unity should not be viewed strictly from political lenses but rather through broader social and religious perspectives that foster harmony.
He also stressed that responsibility for social vices should not be placed on youths alone, pointing out that adults equally play significant roles. He encouraged a shift in conversations away from divisive narratives, including unhealthy gender related debates, towards collective responsibility and mutual understanding.
Prof. Garba concluded by expressing profound gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the university management to the Kano State Commissioner of Police and the event organizers for selecting KHAIRUN as the host institution for the summit, reaffirming the university’s readiness to support initiatives that promote peace, security and national development.
