Labour Unions at University of Cross River Initiate Warning Strike Over Funding Issues
Key issues prompting the strike include inadequate university funding, non-implementation of salary adjustments, lack of capital projects, and encroachment on university land by the host community.
Labour unions at the University of Cross River have commenced a three-day warning strike to address ongoing concerns regarding funding and staff compensation. The strike involves the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
According to a joint statement from Mark Ayo, SSANU Chairman, and Vincent Etta, NAAT Chairman, the strike follows multiple notices issued to university authorities over the past months. The unions had previously sent correspondence on June 11, July 15, and August 7, seeking responses to their demands, but received no action.
Key issues prompting the strike include inadequate university funding, non-implementation of salary adjustments, lack of capital projects, and encroachment on university land by the host community. The unions argue that these issues have caused significant hardship for university staff and have called for urgent action to address their grievances.
