UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Addresses Staff Welfare and Institutional Growth at Congregation Meeting

The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, reaffirmed her commitment to staff welfare and the university’s global competitiveness during the second Meeting of the University Congregation on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the J.F. Ade. Ajayi Auditorium.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, reaffirmed her commitment to staff welfare and the university’s global competitiveness during the second Meeting of the University Congregation on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the J.F. Ade. Ajayi Auditorium.

In her address, Professor Ogunsola tackled pressing issues such as electricity, staff housing, and unpaid salary arrears. She outlined the university’s efforts to mitigate high electricity costs through alternative solutions and urged the university community to adopt more efficient energy practices. On staff housing, she announced ongoing negotiations with the Federal Ministry of Works to provide affordable on-campus housing.

Regarding unpaid salary arrears, the Vice-Chancellor assured staff of continuous engagement with relevant government bodies to resolve the issue, encouraging them to remain hopeful.

Professor Ogunsola also highlighted significant achievements under her leadership, including a pioneering joint Masters program in Law with the University of Dundee, successful student enterprise initiatives, and numerous infrastructural developments. She revealed the Senate’s decision to restructure certain faculties, leading to the creation of new faculties and courses.

During the Question & Answer session, she addressed various concerns related to staff and institutional advancement. A key resolution from the Any-Other-Business section was the review of the one-third quorum requirement for Congregation meetings.

The meeting concluded with elections for representatives to the Senate, Budget Monitoring Committee, Housing Committee, and International School Management Board, conducted via an e-voting system. Professor Tawakalitu Adesalu of the Department of Botany served as the Returning Officer.
