Lead City University Ibadan has announced plans to commemorate World Environment Day 2026 through a collaborative academic and professional event focused on urbanisation, climate change, and sustainable urban development.

The event is being organised by the Department of Environmental Health Science (EHS) in partnership with the National Association of Environmental Health Students of Nigeria (NAEHS), LCU Chapter, and the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Oyo State Chapter.

This year’s theme, “Urbanisation and Climate Change: Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future,” is aimed at addressing the environmental pressures created by rapid urban growth while promoting innovative strategies for building climate-resilient communities.

The programme is expected to bring together environmental professionals, researchers, policymakers, students, and members of the public for discussions on sustainability, environmental health, and urban planning solutions.

The event will feature a lineup of guest speakers, including Dr Shade J. Akinsete, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, University of Ibadan; Engr. Prof. Adelere Ezekiel Adeniran, FNSE, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Babcock University; and Dr Adeola Alex Adesuyi (MNES, MSPON, MAEIAN), EHS/Sustainability Operations Manager at British American Tobacco Nigeria.

The commemoration is scheduled for June 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. and will hold at the Conference Centre, Lead City University, Ibadan.

Organisers stated that the event will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange and policy-relevant dialogue on environmental sustainability, climate adaptation, and resilient city development.

The university encouraged participation from across academic, professional, and public sectors, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges in urban spaces.
