NANS Urges Ogun Government to Cover Medical Expenses of Student Shot Near D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has visited a student injured during a robbery attack near D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic in Ogun State, urging the state government to cover his medical expenses and strengthen campus security.

This is contained in a statement signed by NANS National Secretary General, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman and sent to Daily Sun on Thursday.

According to the statement, the visit was undertaken to express the solidarity of the Nigerian students community with the victim, assess his medical condition firsthand, and reassure his family that they were not alone during this difficult period.

The statement reads, “The delegation led by the National Secretary General was warmly received by the medical team attending to the victim.

“Following a briefing by the doctors and nurses, the delegation was informed that the bullet lodged in the victim’s body had been successfully removed through surgery and that he is responding positively to treatment.”

NANS stated that while this development is encouraging, the road to full recovery remains ongoing and requires sustained medical attention and financial support.

The national delegation also met with the victim’s parents, who expressed gratitude for the visit and the concern shown by the students body.

The NANS Secretary General assured the family that the association would continue to engage relevant authorities until justice is served and the victim receives every necessary support.

“The unfortunate attack, which claimed the life of another student and left others injured, is a painful reminder of the worsening security situation around tertiary institutions in Ogun State.

“No student should have to fear for their life simply because they are pursuing an education. The safety and welfare of students must remain a top priority for every responsible government,” the statement further reads.

Meanwhile, NANS passionately called on the Ogun State Government under Governor Dapo Abiodun to immediately assume full responsibility for the victim’s medical bills, rehabilitation, and every other healthcare expense required until he makes a complete recovery.

The student body noted that the emotional trauma, physical pain, and financial burden should not be borne by the victim and his family alone.

Furthermore, NANS urged the Ogun State Government, the Ogun State Police Command, and all relevant security agencies to expedite investigations into the attack, ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those responsible, and implement proactive security measures to prevent a recurrence.

“We also call for increased security patrols, the deployment of additional security personnel, and improved surveillance around D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic and other campuses across Ogun State that have become vulnerable to recurring attacks,” the association stated.

NANS reiterated that the persistent cases of robbery, assault, and violent attacks on students across various higher institutions in Ogun State and beyond are unacceptable.

“Institutions of learning must never become cheaters of fear and bloodshed.

“The lives of Nigerian students are valuable and deserve adequate protection,” the statement also reads.

The Comrade Babatunde Akinteye-led NANS commended the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta for their professionalism and dedication and expresses appreciated to every individual and organization that has shown support since the unfortunate incident.

NANS said it remains resolute in its commitment to defending the rights, safety, welfare and dignity of every Nigerian student.

“We will continue to monitor the victim’s recovery, pursue justice for all affected students, and engage all relevant stakeholders until meaningful and lasting security reforms are implemented,” the student body stated.
