The National Universities Commission (NUC) has commenced resource verification of 73 degree programmes across seven faculties at the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State.

The exercise, which began today, is a crucial step toward securing approval for the university’s academic programmes. The NUC team is assessing facilities, staff strength, and curriculum to ensure compliance with national standards.

Welcoming the officials, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prince Chinedu Mmom expressed gratitude and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate to commence academic activities in the September 2025 session. He highlighted the university’s rapid infrastructural development despite the absence of federal budgetary allocations, noting support from the Rivers State Government and the Koroma community, which donated 99.3 hectares of land.

Prof. Mmom also revealed that FUET had signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with nearby institutions, including Rivers State University, Rivers State Polytechnic, and University of Port Harcourt, for temporary academic and infrastructural support. Preparations underway include dormitories, classrooms, laboratories, ICT centres with over 170 computers, and staff quarters.

Speaking for the NUC team, Prof. John Ohaka explained that the verification ensures the university is ready to provide quality education aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stating, “This exercise will help position FUET to compete globally.” He commended the university management for their hospitality and confirmed thorough inspections across both campuses.

The seven faculties under verification are:

  • Faculty of Environmental Sciences
  • Faculty of Engineering and Technology
  • Faculty of Management Technology
  • Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences
  • Faculty of Agriculture
  • Faculty of Allied Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Education

Located in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, FUET is among Nigeria’s newest federal universities, established to expand tertiary education access and advance research in environmental and technological studies.
