The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, has announced the death of a final year medical student, Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, during a clinical viva examination.

The incident was confirmed in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.

According to the statement, Adewole, a Part IV medical student in the College of Health Sciences, reportedly complained of sudden chest pain while undergoing the examination.

The university said he was immediately attended to by lecturers and fellow medical students before medical intervention was initiated. However, despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead.

The development has reportedly thrown the university community into mourning.

Reacting to the incident, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

He also sympathized with the student’s colleagues, friends, and members of the College of Health Sciences over the loss.

The university management stated that it is currently in contact with the family and relevant authorities as efforts continue to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide necessary support.
