UCH Commemorates Pink Month With Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, on Saturday, October 31, 2026, joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2026 Pink Month, otherwise known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with a fitness walk and public enlightenment campaign.
As part of activities themed "Strike Out Cancer," the Hospital organised a fitness walk from UCH to Agodi Gate to sensitise members of the public on breast cancer prevention and early detection.
The initiative underscores the Hospital's commitment to preventive healthcare, community outreach and health education.
Speaking during the walk, a Consultant Radiologist in the Department of Radiology, Dr. Elizabeth Idowu, said the programme was aimed at educating the public on breast cancer. She noted that regular physical exercise can reduce the risk of cancer by 20 percent and emphasised that early detection saves lives.
Dr. Idowu said the campaign was also designed to enlighten market men and women on the importance of breast self-examination, noting that men also need to examine their breasts. She added that participants were educated on self-breast examination, healthy dietary habits, daily exercise and annual screening in well-equipped facilities.

She disclosed that as part of the Pink Month activities, the Hospital provided 200 free mammograms for female members of staff aged 40 and above on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, encouraged women aged 40 and above to regularly carry out self-breast examination, reiterating that early detection saves lives. He reaffirmed Management's commitment to promoting wellness, early cancer detection and accessible screening services for staff and members of the public.
