Unidel Graduates Must Offer More Than Certificates, Says Vc

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delta, UNIDEL, Agbor, Prof. Eric Eboh, has declared that the era when a university degree alone guaranteed success is over, insisting that graduates must possess strong social, entrepreneurial and digital competencies to remain relevant in today's highly competitive global economy.

Prof. Eboh made the assertion on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2026, during a courtesy visit by the Acting Director of the University's Career Development and Counselling Centre, CDCC, Dr. Olufunke Chenube, accompanied by career development experts, Mr. Peter Adeyemi and Ms. Dorothy Lameed, to his office.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that universities must move beyond producing certificate holders to raising transformational leaders equipped with practical skills, innovative thinking and social relevance. "Our universities should build human beings, not merely certificate holders," he said.

The courtesy visit was attended by the Registrar, Dr. Esther Akpojuvie, and Mr. Rufus Omafuagbaru, Secretary of the CDCC.

Later in the day, the Career Development and Counselling Centre translated the Vice-Chancellor's vision into action by organising a career workshop tagged "Unboxing the Future: From Campus to Career and Venture – A Day with Jobred and Cubbes," which attracted a large gathering of newly graduated students at the University's 1,000-Capacity Hall.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor at the event, the Acting Dean, Faculty of Education, Dr. Florence Omumu, while declaring the workshop open, stated that academic qualifications alone were no longer sufficient for success in the modern workplace. "A degree alone is no longer enough," she said.

In her welcome address, Dr. Chenube described the workshop as a practical demonstration of the Vice-Chancellor's RAISE strategy. She commended the VC for creating an enabling environment that prioritises career readiness and graduate employability. She challenged participants to embrace the opportunities before them, noting that the future is shaped by deliberate preparation rather than chance.

Delivering a presentation titled "From CV to Career: How to Position Yourself for Top Opportunities," Co-founder of Jobred Consultant Group, Dorothy Lameed, urged graduates to build strong personal brands, master digital communication and leverage social media strategically to access global career opportunities.

In another session titled "From Problems to Possibilities: Building Ventures that Solve Real Problems," Chief Executive of Cubbes Digital Platform, Peter Adeyemi, challenged graduates to embrace artificial intelligence, continuous learning and innovation as indispensable tools for future success.

The workshop culminated in practical training sessions and interactive discussions, providing participants with hands-on guidance on career development, entrepreneurship, digital skills and emerging opportunities in the global economy.

The programme drew the presence of Prof. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okoh, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Head, Department of Educational Foundation, Dr. (Mrs.) Mary Asabor, members of the Career Development and Counselling Centre, as well as other staff and graduating students.
