UNIMAID Receives Tree Seedlings From Great Green Wall Agency, Holds Planting Ceremony At Botanical Garden

The Department of Botany, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID, on Thursday, 30 July 2026, held a tree-planting ceremony at the University's Botanical Garden following a generous donation of tree seedlings by the Borno State Agency for the Great Green Wall.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Mele, was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Central Administration, Professor Babagana Bako.
Commending the Department of Botany, Professor Bako expressed profound appreciation to the Borno State Agency for the Great Green Wall for the donation. He described the initiative as a highly welcome development, noting that it will significantly contribute to environmental sustainability and academic advancement within the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor further praised the Department of Botany for its proactive commitment to environmental conservation. He assured the department of the University Management's continuous support in achieving its core mandate.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Borno State Agency for the Great Green Wall, Ambassador Usman Aliyu, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to supporting the Department through future strategic collaborations. He also commended the Vice-Chancellor for his visionary leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the holistic growth and development of the University.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Head of the Department of Botany, Dr. Ahmad Abator, received the Vice-Chancellor's representative, the Director-General, and other distinguished guests. He expressed sincere appreciation to the University Management for its continuous backing and thanked the Borno State Agency for the Great Green Wall for the timely intervention.
The tree-planting exercise is expected to enhance the University's green cover, support teaching and research in botany and environmental sciences, and contribute to broader efforts to combat desertification in the region.
