UNIPORT SUG Warns Against Overspeeding, Reckless Driving on Campus

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has issued an official warning to students, vehicle owners, drivers, motorcyclists, tricycle operators and other road users against overspeeding, reckless driving and other dangerous vehicular activities within the university campus.

The warning was contained in an official notice dated September 16, 2026, signed by the SUG Executive President, Hon. Justice Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike.

According to the notice, the SUG expressed concern over increasing cases of overspeeding, reckless driving, dangerous manoeuvring and other irresponsible vehicular activities on campus.

The union stated that the safety of students and other members of the university community remains the responsibility of all stakeholders, stressing that disregard for campus traffic regulations poses a serious threat to lives and property.

Directives to Motorists

All motorists operating within the University of Port Harcourt campus were directed to:

• Observe approved speed limits and traffic regulations.

• Desist from overspeeding, reckless driving, racing, dangerous overtaking and other forms of irresponsible driving.

• Exercise extreme caution around lecture halls, hostels, pedestrian walkways, residential areas, motor parks and other areas with high student traffic.

• Avoid parking in unauthorised locations or obstructing roads, walkways, entrances and emergency access routes.

• Comply with lawful instructions issued by authorised university security and traffic personnel.

• Ensure that vehicles are properly registered and operated in accordance with applicable university regulations.

Penalties for Defaulters

The SUG warned that vehicles involved in overspeeding, reckless driving, dangerous driving or other serious violations of the university’s applicable traffic regulations will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

It added that, subject to university procedures and the authority of designated university officials, vehicles of defaulters may be seized or impounded, while owners or drivers may face appropriate penalties and disciplinary measures.

Repeat offenders, according to the notice, will be treated with greater severity where permitted under the university’s regulations.

12-Man Acting Traffic Enforcement Committee

The SUG also announced plans to constitute a 12-Man Acting Traffic Enforcement Committee to support compliance with the directive and promote safety within the campus.

The committee will be responsible for:

• Monitoring compliance with campus traffic regulations.

• Reporting cases of overspeeding and reckless driving.

• Identifying areas where traffic violations frequently occur.

• Educating students and motorists on responsible driving.

• Documenting repeat offenders.

• Making recommendations on traffic management.

The committee will also work with authorised university security personnel and submit periodic reports to the SUG President.

The notice listed Eze Prince as Chairman, Obiora Victor Ayogu as Secretary and Diligence Chimeru Umeobi as Coordinator, alongside other members.

The SUG stated that the committee will operate within the authority granted to it and work in collaboration with the university management, security department and other relevant authorities.

Final Warning

The union described the notice as a formal warning to all motorists operating within the University of Port Harcourt campus, urging them to comply fully with campus traffic regulations and drive responsibly.

The SUG further stated that overspeeding is not a show of skill and warned that it puts lives at risk, calling for a safe, peaceful and orderly university environment.
