UNIPORT VC Pledges Stronger Partnerships with Host Communities

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Chike Princewill, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening relationships and partnerships with the University’s host communities for mutual development.

Professor Chike gave the assurance on Saturday, September 12, 2026, during familiarisation visits to the palaces of the traditional rulers of Aluu, Choba and Akpor Kingdoms. The visits formed part of his ongoing engagement with stakeholders and marked his formal introduction to the monarchs as the University’s 10th Vice-Chancellor.

Accompanied by the University’s Principal Officers, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the visits were intended to deepen mutual understanding, sustain cordial relations and create a stronger platform for collaboration between the University and its host communities.

He said his administration would work closely with the traditional institutions to identify their concerns, understand the challenges confronting the communities and explore practical ways of addressing issues of mutual interest.

In Aluu Kingdom, he met with His Royal Majesty, Eze Chima Okpara, the Nyenweali of Aluu Kingdom. He also visited His Royal Highness, Eze Raymond Webilor Okocha, the Nyenweali of Choba, before proceeding to the palace of His Royal Majesty, Eze Amb. Levi Ozowunwu Amos Orlu Oriebe, JP, Nye We Ali Akpor.

Professor Chike assured the monarchs that the concerns raised would receive due attention within the framework of the University’s policies and available opportunities.

He promised that his administration would maintain open communication with the traditional institutions, work with them to better understand the needs of their communities and promote initiatives capable of advancing peace, inclusion and sustainable development.

The Vice-Chancellor further emphasised that the University could achieve more when it enjoys the support and cooperation of its host communities.

He called for continued dialogue, mutual respect and partnership, noting that the University’s presence should contribute positively to the social and economic development of the communities around it.

The traditional rulers welcomed the Vice-Chancellor and his entourage, expressing delight at the visits and reaffirming their commitment to sustaining cordial relations with the University.

Their requests included employment opportunities for qualified indigenes, consideration of indigenous firms for contract awards, and improved admission opportunities for candidates from their respective kingdoms.

They also expressed interest in stronger partnerships with the University to promote the development of their communities.
