The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has been officially confirmed as the host institution for the 28th Nigerian University Games (NUGA), scheduled to hold in August 2026.

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has been officially confirmed as the host institution for the 28th Nigerian University Games (NUGA), scheduled to hold in August 2026.

The confirmation followed the formal handover of the hosting flag and the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Offiong Efanga Offiong, granting the university the mandate to host the Games.

The NUGA delegation was led by Dr. Alayode Ajibua, Director of Sports at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), and Acting President of the Nigerian University Games Association. The flag handover and MoA signing were conducted during a courtesy visit by the NUGA Games Committee, led by the Chairman of UNICAL NUGA Games 2026, Professor Lukas Ogunjimi.

Speaking during the event, Professor Offiong assured the delegation of the university’s full preparedness and commitment to delivering what he described as the best NUGA Games ever, citing Calabar’s long-standing reputation as a peaceful, hospitable, and culturally vibrant city.

With the Cross River State Government serving as the Chief Host, preparations are already underway as UNICAL positions itself to stage a memorable sporting and cultural festival for athletes, officials, and visitors from universities across Nigeria.

The 28th NUGA Games is expected to further strengthen unity, sportsmanship, and cultural exchange within the Nigerian university system.
