The University of Maiduguri Department of Geology recently organised a three-day in-house workshop aimed at enhancing the knowledge and practical competency of its staff in sedimentology and paleontology laboratory practices.

The event took place at the Department of Geology Conference Hall, Faculty of Physical Sciences, starting on Monday, 12th January 2026.

The workshop was officially opened by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Central Administration Professor Baba Gana Bako. In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor commended the Faculty and the Department for their outstanding contributions and assured his continued support for similar professional development initiatives.

Resource persons included Dr. Fatimoh Dupe Adams, Mr. Alhamdu Kura Landee, Mal. Daisy S. Saleh, Dr. Yakubu Mohammad, Mal. Madu Y. Usman, and Mal. Bashir Ibrahim, who delivered papers and demonstrated practical laboratory sessions. Presentations focused on laboratory safety, sedimentology, paleontology, and related departmental courses, combining theory with hands-on exercises.

In his closing remarks, the Head of Department emphasised the importance of applying the knowledge gained and encouraged participants to emulate the professionalism of the resource persons. Certificates of participation were presented to attendees on behalf of University management.
