UNN Graduates 12,895 Students at 55th Convocation, 168 Emerge with First Class

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has graduated a total of 12,895 students across first degree, diploma and postgraduate programmes during its 55th convocation ceremony, with 168 students earning First Class honours.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Simon Ortuanya, disclosed that 10,641 graduands received first degree and diploma certificates, while 2,994 others were awarded higher degree certificates.

He explained that the postgraduate category comprised 1,390 PhD graduates, 1,340 Master’s degree recipients and 214 postgraduate diploma graduands.

Professor Ortuanya described the achievements of the graduands as a reflection of the University's enduring culture of academic excellence and commitment to producing outstanding scholars.

The Vice-Chancellor said that upon assuming office, he inherited decades of infrastructural decay but resolved to confront the challenges directly rather than allow them to hinder the University's progress.

He said his administration chose to acknowledge the institution's challenges and embark on a rebuilding process aimed at restoring confidence, strengthening academic excellence, expanding research capacity, promoting innovation and repositioning the University of Nigeria for greater global relevance.

According to Professor Ortuanya, the rebuilding effort was not limited to physical infrastructure but also focused on institutional renewal and improving the University's overall academic standing.

Highlighting the achievements of his administration after 11 months in office, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that more than 100 strategic projects had been initiated across the University's Nsukka, Enugu and Ituku-Ozalla campuses.

He noted that the projects were part of efforts to transform the University and consolidate its position as a leading institution of higher learning.
