ABU Holds Talk Shop on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Tax Implications

The Department of Local Government and Development Studies, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), recently organized its 2024/2025 Talk Shop Series 4.0. The event focused on the implications of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and SSB tax on health development in Nigeria.

Dr. Bebeji identified several challenges associated with SSB tax, including regressiveness, job losses, smuggling, and tax evasion. He recommended the adoption of a sugar-based tiered specific excise tax, raising tax rates to ensure a 10-20% price increase, and broadening coverage to include teas, concentrates, and flavored waters.

The event featured interactive sessions and was attended by teaching and non-teaching staff of the Faculty of Administration and students. The Talk Shop Series aims to enhance knowledge, skills, and collaboration among students, the university community, and the general public.
