Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has officially received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce new academic programmes in Basic Medical, Health, and Physical Sciences effective immediately.
According to a press release signed by the University Registrar, the approval covers six new degree programmes designed to meet evolving demands in the health and science sectors:
Newly Approved Programmes:
- B.NSc Nursing Science
- B.PH Public Health
- B.EnvHSc Environmental Health Science
- B.MLS Medical Laboratory Science
- B.HT Health Technology
- B.SLT Science Laboratory Technology
The university emphasized that these programmes are globally relevant, highly marketable, and aligned with its mission to expand access to quality tertiary education and prepare graduates for sustainable impact in their fields.
Special Highlight – Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) Programme:
The SLT programme allows students to specialize in one of eight technology options:
- Biology Technology Option – Biological systems, zoology, botany, applied life sciences.
- Biochemistry Technology Option – Biochemical processes, molecular biology, applications in food, pharmaceutical, and medical sciences.
- Chemistry Technology Option – Laboratory analysis, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry with industrial applications.
- Chemical/Petrochemical Technology Option – Chemical engineering principles, petroleum exploration, refining processes.
- Geology/Mining Technology Option – Earth sciences, mineral exploration, mining techniques, environmental geology.
- Microbiology/Biotechnology Option – Microbial sciences, biotechnology innovations, applications in health, agriculture, and industry.
- Physical/Electronics Technology Option – Applied physics, instrumentation, electronics for scientific and industrial use.
- Physiology/Pharmacology Technology Option – Human physiology, pharmacology, and biomedical laboratory techniques.
