Alabar Visits UNIJOS VC, Charges Postgraduate Students to Undertake Problem-Solving Research

The Vice-Chancellor of Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, MOAUM, Professor Timothy Terseer Alabar, has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, UNIJOS, Professor Tanko Ishaya, in Jos.

Professor Alabar, who is also the Coordinator of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities in the North-Central Zone, used the visit to engage Professor Ishaya, who is the Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities in Nigeria, on issues of common interest concerning the administration and development of universities in the region and the country.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two Vice-Chancellors to exchange ideas on strengthening inter-university collaboration, addressing emerging challenges confronting the Nigerian university system, and advancing the collective interests of universities in the North-Central Zone.

The engagement also focused on the need for university leaders to deepen cooperation, share experiences and identify innovative approaches to addressing institutional and systemic challenges, particularly in an increasingly complex higher education environment.

During the visit, Professor Alabar participated in the examination of nine Master of Science, http://M.Sc., students of Marketing in the Department of Marketing, University of Jos.

Interacting with the postgraduate students, Professor Alabar challenged them to approach research as more than a requirement for the award of a degree. He urged them to focus their research on real and pressing challenges confronting their communities, institutions, businesses and the wider society.

According to him, postgraduate research should ultimately contribute to the generation of knowledge capable of translating into practical solutions to societal problems.

Professor Alabar emphasized that the essence of postgraduate education extends beyond the production of academic papers and the acquisition of certificates. He noted that at a time when Nigeria is confronted with complex economic, social, technological and developmental challenges, universities have a responsibility to produce research that addresses real-world problems, improves lives and adds tangible value to society.

He therefore encouraged the students to become solution-oriented researchers whose scholarly works could influence public policy, improve business practices, support communities and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The Vice-Chancellor further stressed the importance of ensuring that university scholarship remains responsive to the needs of society. He noted that the relevance of higher education should be measured not only by the volume of research produced but also by its capacity to generate knowledge, innovation and solutions to contemporary challenges.

The visit and academic engagement underscored Professor Alabar’s commitment to fostering strategic collaboration among universities, promoting quality postgraduate education and research, and advancing scholarship that is relevant to the development needs of Nigeria and humanity.
