The maiden edition of the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG) North-West Zone Conference was held at Bayero University Kano, themed "Development at Crossroads: The Role of Geographers in the Current Development-Environment-Security Nexus".
The conference addressed critical challenges facing geography in Nigeria, including:
- Neglect of geography at the secondary school level
- Fragmentation of geography into other disciplines
- Ignorance of geographic knowledge among policymakers and the public
Recommendations included:
- Reintroducing geography as a compulsory subject in Nigerian schools
- Asserting geographers' professional capabilities in solving societal issues
The event featured over 80 abstracts, keynote speeches, and lead papers from prominent figures in the field, emphasizing the relevance of geography in addressing contemporary challenges in Nigeria.
