The maiden edition of the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG) North-West Zone Conference was held at Bayero University Kano, themed "Development at Crossroads: The Role of Geographers in the Current Development-Environment-Security Nexus".

The conference addressed critical challenges facing geography in Nigeria, including:

- Neglect of geography at the secondary school level

- Fragmentation of geography into other disciplines
