Bayero University Kano Students Urge Immediate Action on Education Crisis
They express concern over rising educational costs and increasing financial burdens that have led many to drop out due to the inability to pay basic registration fees.
Students from higher institutions in Kano State, particularly Bayero University Kano (BUK), have issued an urgent call for government intervention regarding the escalating education crisis. They express concern over rising educational costs and increasing financial burdens that have led many to drop out due to the inability to pay basic registration fees.
In a press release signed by Comrade Abuzaid Salisu Hikima, President of the National Association of Kano State Students, the group reminded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of his campaign promises and the state of emergency he declared for education. While they acknowledged previous support, they lamented that only a few students received assistance with registration fees this year, leaving many struggling to continue their studies.
The students contrasted their situation with that of their peers in neighboring Jigawa State, where Governor Malam Umar Namadi fully covered registration fees for all Jigawa students at BUK last year and provided an additional scholarship of over N100,000 this year. They criticized the Kano government for failing to translate its rhetoric into meaningful action and for allocating significant funds to a select group of students studying abroad while neglecting local students.
The statement emphasized that support for international education is important, but local students deserve equal attention. The group implored Governor Yusuf to expedite the release of scholarships and financial assistance to help students continue their education, stressing that the future of Kano relies on the education of its youth.
The students remain hopeful that the governor will take decisive action to address these pressing issues, as they continue to support his vision for the state.
