FCE Pankshin Holds 3rd International Conference on Adapting Curricula to National Needs and Societal Changes

The Federal College of Education (FCE) Pankshin has concluded its 3rd International Conference, hosted in collaboration with the PANCEN Journal of Education (PAJE). The conference, themed “Resetting Curriculum Provisions with National Needs: The Imperatives of Evolving Societal Dynamics,” focused on adapting educational curricula to better align with national requirements and societal changes.

Dr. Mrs. Christiana Zumyil, Acting Provost of FCE Pankshin, emphasized the importance of using the conference as a platform to reevaluate and adjust curricula to meet both local and national needs. She described the theme of the conference as “apt and appropriate,” stressing that education must evolve to address the dynamic needs of society.

Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, Chairman of the occasion and Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, was represented by Mrs. Chindung Shom, Permanent Member 1 of the Plateau State SUBEB. Mrs. Shom, in her opening remarks, acknowledged the significance of the conference and the need for curriculum reforms.

Dr. Andrew Jatau, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, expressed optimism about the conference’s potential to generate strategies for aligning curricula with societal needs and producing graduates of international caliber.

Professor John Tyavbee Ajai from Taraba State University, Jalingo, delivered the keynote address. His presentation focused on understanding national needs and the necessity for a holistic, adaptive, and future-focused curriculum reset. Professor Ajai emphasized that educational systems must evolve to prepare individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society amidst rapid changes.

Additional lead paper presentations included insights from Professor Benedict Umaru of the University of Abuja, Professor Irene Govender from the University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, and Professor Ahmadu Gaiya of the University of Jos. Their discussions centered on aligning curricula with national needs and societal dynamics.

Dr. Sunday Jacob of FCE Pankshin, Professor Robert Okorie of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and Dr. Demola Lewis from the University of Ibadan also contributed to the conference with papers focusing on various aspects of curriculum reform.

The conference featured engaging cultural performances by the National Association of Mwaghavwul Students Cultural group and was concluded with a vote of thanks by Nna Elizabeth Yiltong Homsuk, Registrar of the College.
