University of Maiduguri Debunks "Baseless" Viral Video Alleging Student Collaboration with Boko Haram

The management of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has issued a press release categorically refuting a viral video circulating on social media platforms that claims students of the institution were arrested for collaborating with Boko Haram insurgents.

In the statement dated January 13, 2026, the university administration labeled the allegations as "totally baseless, false and mischievous," clarifying that no student of the university has been found to have links with Boko Haram or any similar groups.

The university emphasized its proactive stance against extremism and violence, asserting that, on the contrary, it has been a leader in national security efforts within the North East region.

"The University of Maiduguri has been at the forefront of countering violent extremism, promoting peace and supporting national security efforts," the statement read. "The University community consists of disciplined, law-abiding staff and students drawn from diverse backgrounds."

The institution strongly urged parents, guardians, and the general public to disregard the false narrative and refrain from further spreading the misinformation, highlighting the potential negative impact of such falsehoods.

The statement, signed by the Registrar, Ahmad A. Lawan, affirmed the university's steadfast commitment to academic excellence, moral discipline, and the promotion of peace, security, and national unity.
