LASU Records Historic Fifth-Place Finish at NUGA Games, Targets More Gold

The Lagos State University (LASU) contingent to the 27th Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) presented their record-breaking medal haul to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

Team LASU achieved its highest-ever standing in the history of the NUGA games, securing the fifth position overall out of 74 participating universities. The impressive tally included a total of 39 medals: 10 gold, 14 silver, and 15 bronze. The games were hosted by the University of Jos from November 6th to 16th, 2025.

Receiving the team, the Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, praised the athletes for being worthy ambassadors of the institution. "LASU is committed to building a sports system that other universities can emulate," Professor Olatunji-Bello stated, acknowledging the determination that led to their historic finish.

The Chairman of the LASU Sports Council, Professor Simeon Dosunmu, attributed the success to the university management's unprecedented support and sponsorship. He appealed for continued investment to facilitate participation in future competitions, expressing confidence that the team is positioned for greater honors.

In a challenging yet optimistic charge, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged the athletes to aim for exclusively gold medals in future outings and announced that financial rewards had been approved for all medallists. The ceremony concluded with a symbolic decoration of the Vice-Chancellor with a gold medal by the Sports Council Chairman.
