Expert Advocates Tech-Driven Security Overhaul at Achievers University Maiden Engineering Lecture

Achievers University has successfully hosted the maiden edition of its Faculty of Engineering and Technology Distinguished Personality Lecture, with a strong call for the adoption of emerging technologies to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

The lecture, held on Wednesday, 22nd April, 2026, at the Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Auditorium, featured renowned engineering scholar, Prof. Nureni Adedapo Adewole of the University of Ibadan, who delivered a thought-provoking presentation titled “Role of Emerging Technology in the Reengineering of Nigeria’s Security Architecture.”

Addressing a distinguished audience of principal officers, academics, students, and invited guests, Prof. Adewole emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to transition from conventional security approaches to technology-driven systems capable of addressing modern threats.

“Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, biometrics and data analytics have become indispensable tools for effective security management in today’s world,” he stated. “Nigeria must strategically integrate these tools to enhance intelligence gathering, coordination and rapid response.”

The security studies expert highlighted key challenges confronting the nation’s security framework, including inter-agency rivalry, overlapping responsibilities, inadequate funding, and limited technical capacity. He noted that these factors continue to weaken operational effectiveness despite the existence of well-conceived security strategies.

Prof. Adewole advocated the establishment of a unified national intelligence command to harmonise real-time data across security agencies, describing it as critical to improving coordination and eliminating delays in response.

He also called for sustained investment in human capital development, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, digital forensics and software engineering, stressing that technological advancement must be complemented by skilled personnel, strong institutions and community engagement.

Declaring the lecture open, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Achievers University, Prof. Oyesoji Aremu, commended the Faculty of Engineering and Technology for initiating a platform that connects academic excellence with national development priorities. He reiterated the University’s commitment to producing graduates equipped to provide innovative solutions to societal challenges.

In his welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Ayodele Onawumi, described the lecture as a landmark initiative designed to stimulate intellectual engagement and practical discourse at the intersection of engineering, policy and national security.
