FUTH Lafia Offers Free Public Glaucoma Screening; Early Detection Saves Patient’s Sight

As part of efforts to promote a glaucoma-free world, the Federal University Teaching Hospital Lafia has organized a week long free glaucoma screening for members of the staff and the public. The exercise attracted many residents who came to check their eyes and receive medical advice from specialists.

During the screening, Deborah Ali, aged between 35 and 40, who had no prior symptoms, was diagnosed with early-stage glaucoma and was immediately placed on medication to prevent further damage.

Speaking earlier on at an awareness lecture, Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Okpanaki noted that many people live with glaucoma without knowing, as the condition often develops without early symptoms. He encouraged the public to regularly check their eyes to prevent avoidable blindness.
