FUTMinna Hosts NSM Scientific Conference as Prof. Kuta Reaffirms Commitment to Research and Innovation

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Farouk Adamu Kuta, has reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing research, innovation and national development.

Prof. Kuta stated this on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, while officially declaring open the 48th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Society for Microbiology, NSM, hosted by FUT Minna.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor welcomed the President and Executive Council of NSM, keynote speakers, researchers, industry experts, policymakers, partners and other participants to the University. He highlighted FUT Minna’s growing achievements in research and reiterated the institution’s focus on teaching, research, innovation and community service.

Prof. Kuta emphasised the critical role of microbiology in food security, healthcare, environmental sustainability, biotechnology and industrial development. He noted that the conference theme, “Harnessing Microbial Machinery for Green Economy and Industrial Revolution,” is aligned with the nation’s drive towards a green economy and industrial transformation.

The Vice-Chancellor subsequently declared the conference open, setting the tone for the four-day programme of scientific and technical activities.

The opening session featured keynote presentations, technical discussions, cultural performances and contributions on the application of microbial research to national development.

The NSM President, Prof. Saleh Ado, delivered an address on the importance of microbiology in scientific innovation and national development. The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Olabisi Abioye, and the Head of the Department of Microbiology, Prof. Jeremiah Bala, also gave remarks.

Prof. Charles Oluwaseun Adetunji delivered the keynote address on harnessing microbial machinery for green economy and industrial revolution. Prof. Patricia Manko Lar presented a paper on microbial research, green economy, industrial development and sustainable food security. A virtual presentation by Prof. Naga Raju Maddela examined the potential of marine microbes for environmental and public health sustainability.

Speakers and participants stressed the need to bridge the gap between research and practical application, strengthen research funding, promote university-industry collaboration, develop young scientists, and encourage commercialisation and transfer of research innovations.

Discussions also focused on the potential of microbial resources in addressing challenges in food security, healthcare, environmental sustainability and industrial development.

The conference, which runs from September 8 to 11, 2026, has brought together microbiologists, researchers, academics, industry experts, policymakers and other stakeholders from across Nigeria and beyond.

The opening day concluded with knowledge exchange, networking and discussions among researchers and stakeholders. Further scientific presentations and technical sessions are scheduled to continue throughout the conference.
