Gombe State University Hosts 24th Inaugural Lecture as Prof. Mary Erasmus Sula Makes History
Gombe State University (GSU) on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, held its 24th Inaugural Lecture, presented by Professor Mary Erasmus Sula.
The lecture, which took place at the Haruna Kadir Rashid Hall, Gombe State University, commenced at 4:15 p.m. and attracted members of the university management, staff, students, distinguished guests, and the general public.
Professor Sula delivered an insightful lecture titled, “Invisible Hunger, Apparent Consequences on Cognitive Performance of Learners in the Jewel State: The Concerns of a Science Educator.” The presentation examined the impact of hidden hunger and nutritional deficiencies on learners’ cognitive development and academic performance, while drawing attention to the need for strategic interventions to improve educational outcomes.

The Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee, Professor Gurama Dukku, formally introduced the event and highlighted the importance of inaugural lectures in universities worldwide.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta, congratulated Professor Mary Erasmus Sula on attaining the distinguished academic milestone and successfully delivering the university’s 24th Inaugural Lecture.
Professor Yauta emphasized the significance of inaugural lectures in the academic tradition of universities, noting that they provide professors with a platform to showcase years of research, scholarly contributions, and solutions to societal challenges. He described the lecture as an important avenue for knowledge dissemination and intellectual engagement within and beyond the university community.
The lecture was particularly significant as Professor Mary Erasmus Sula continues to break barriers in academia. She is recognized as the first female professor from Waja Land, the first female professor in the Faculty of Education, and the first female professor in the Department of Science Education at Gombe State University.
Professor Sula holds a B.Sc. (Ed.) from the University of Maiduguri (UniMaid), an M.Ed. from the University of Jos (UniJos), and a Ph.D. from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU). She is a Professor of Science Education in the Faculty of Education, Gombe State University.
The successful hosting of the 24th Inaugural Lecture further amplifies Gombe State University’s commitment to academic excellence, research, and the promotion of scholarship for national development.
