LASU Invites Applications for Admission into Portuguese and Yoruba Programmes at Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies

The Lagos State University (LASU) has announced the commencement of admission into various Portuguese and Yoruba programmes at its Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies (LASUCAS) for qualified candidates.

The Lagos State University (LASU) has announced the commencement of admission into various Portuguese and Yoruba programmes at its Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies (LASUCAS) for qualified candidates.

The programmes are designed to promote linguistic, cultural, and academic exchange between Nigeria, Brazil, and other Lusophone countries.

According to a statement signed by Mr. Emmanuel A. Fanu, Registrar and Secretary to Council, the programmes available include the CELPE-Bras Training Programme for Scholarship in Brazil, Diploma in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, Certificate in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, and Proficiency Certificate in Yoruba for Non-Native Speakers.

CELPE-Bras Training Programme for Scholarship in Brazil

This programme prepares candidates for the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners (CELPE-Bras) examination — a prerequisite for Nigerian students seeking scholarships in Brazil for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Admission Requirements:

  • Minimum of five (5) credits in WAEC/SSCE.
  • Applicants for undergraduate scholarships must be between 17 and 23 years old.
  • Postgraduate candidates must hold at least a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree.
    Duration: Six (6) months.

Diploma in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

The diploma qualifies graduates for admission into the degree programme in Portuguese/English at LASU.
Admission Requirements:

  • At least four (4) credits, including English Language, at not more than two sittings in GCE O-Level or equivalent.
  • Candidates with three (3) credits at one sitting and five (5) years of work experience in a corporate or government establishment are eligible.
  • Mature candidates (above 35 years) with three (3) credits at one sitting may also apply.
    Duration: Four (4) semesters or two (2) academic sessions (part-time).

Certificate in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

This certificate programme targets individuals travelling to Lusophone countries for education, trade, journalism, or tourism. It also qualifies holders for admission into the Diploma in Portuguese.
Admission Requirements:

  • WASC/GCE O-Level with credits in at least three (3) subjects, including English, at not more than two sittings.
  • Alternatively, three (3) credits at one sitting plus five (5) years’ work experience in a corporate or government setting.
    Duration: Six (6) months (two modules of three months each, part-time).

Proficiency Certificate in Yoruba for Non-Native Speakers

This course caters to foreigners and Nigerians interested in Yoruba Language, Literature, and Culture, particularly targeting learners from Brazil, Portugal, North America, and other regions.
Admission Requirements:

  • Foreigners with a minimum of secondary school qualification or its equivalent.
  • Nigerians with at least three (3) credits in WAEC or NECO.
  • Graduates from any discipline.
  • Mature candidates (above 35 years or with 10 years of work experience) may also apply.
    Note: A pass in Yoruba is not compulsory.
    Duration: Eight (8) weeks (full-time).
