The Vice-Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, Professor Aliyu Shugaba, has received with deep shock and pain, news of the recent fire disaster which destroyed a substantial part of the Maiduguri Monday Market in the early hours of Sunday, 26th February, 2023.

The ugly incident, which led to the destruction of property worth billions of Naira, occurred as the Government of Borno State has committed huge financial and material resources to its post-insurgency reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement programme, marks a dark chapter in the recovery of the people of Borno State, particularly the business community.

Professor Shugaba commends the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for his timely intervention by the immediate approval and release of palliatives, and his words of comfort to persons affected by the incident and the entire people of Borno State. This gesture, he notes, will significantly contribute to soothing the pains experienced by the victims and their quick recovery from its devastating impact.

The Vice-Chancellor is also encouraged by the initial steps taken by the State Government towards unravelling the root cause of the incident, and urged the Governor to remain focused and firm as he deals with the consequences of the unfortunate incident.
