NDA Commandant visits, commends ABU professor for returning over N1 million paid to him after expiration of teaching contract

The Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Major-General John Ochefu Ochai, was recently at the Department of Political Science and International Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he met and praised Prof. Umar Muhammed Ka’oje for voluntarily returning the sum of N1,153,953.36 paid to him after expiration of his teaching contract with the military academy.

The visit was in addition to a letter of commendation dated 11th September, 2023 earlier sent to the University professor by the Commandant in appreciation of Ka’oje’s patriotism and exemplary conduct.

The Commandant, who was received on arrival at the Department by the Head of Department, Dr. Rahanatu Lawal, stressed that only a few people today could exhibit Prof. Ka’oje’s “uncommon moral courage”.

General Ochai explained that he had to follow up the letter of commendation earlier written to the professor with the physical visit to further show appreciation for such act which, according to him, was “extremely rare in our clime”.

While pledging NDA’s readiness to further honour the professor at an appropriate time, the Commandant expressed gratitude to the Department for its well established culture of training leaders to be honest and accountable.

In his response, Prof. Umar Muhammed Ka’oje expressed immense appreciation to the military academy, saying that the Commandant equally deserved commendation for recognising and rewarding honesty.

Dr. Lawal thanked the Commandant for the appreciation to Prof. Ka’oje and the Department, saying that all staff members of the Department were proud of the exemplary conduct displayed by one of them.
