In a one-day training session organized by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission for the staff of Igbinedion University Okada, held on Tuesday, 27th February 2024, at the University Library Conference Hall, key figures emphasized the critical importance of data protection in today’s digital age.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye Ph.D., FAS, set the tone in his opening remarks by highlighting the significance of upholding the highest standards of data protection and privacy within the institution. He emphasized the responsibility of safeguarding the university’s data, which he referred to as the lifeblood of the institution, from unauthorized access, disclosure, or misuse.

The training aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge, tools, and best practices to meet their obligations under data protection regulations. The facilitators from the Nigeria Data Protection Commission were expected to delve into the legal framework governing data protection, discuss common data security threats, and provide practical strategies for mitigating risks and ensuring compliance.

Chiderah Ike-Okonkwo Esq., one of the facilitators, delivered an address on the “Overview of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023,” emphasizing the challenges faced by many organizations due to insufficiently secured infrastructure and lack of awareness.

She stressed that better security not only helps in providing reliable services and protecting sensitive information but also safeguards the organization as a whole. The implementation of technical and organizational measures for information security was highlighted as crucial in protecting sensitive data, mitigating risks, and ensuring operational continuity, aligning with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Hassan Olugbile, another facilitator, focused on “Technical and Organizational Measures,” shedding light on the importance of data management and cybersecurity. He underscored the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on data collection and protection, emphasizing the increasing relevance of cybersecurity as an academic discipline.
