North-eastern University: Governor Yahaya Advocates Local Solutions to Challenges in Nigeria

Gombe state governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has urged the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and other stakeholders to support North-eastern University in their efforts to develop indigenous solutions to critical issues facing Nigeria, particularly in the areas of health, and other sectors.

The governor made the call while speaking during the ongoing North-East Climate Summit (NECS24) in Gombe. According to Governor Yahaya, who was represented by his deputy, Manassah Daniel Jatau, there is a need for the country to harness the creativity and ingenuity of local communities to find sustainable solutions to issues such as healthcare and other challenges.

He said this would mitigate Nigeria’s overdependence on foreign support and solutions to challenges. He said, “May I appeal to the NEDC to encourage and fund research that will come up with indigenous solutions to our problems.” Governor Yahaya said, adding that the North Eastern University in Gombe has created a centre for African medicinal plant research, which, according to him, should be supported for obvious reasons.

Speaking further, the governor stated that Nigerians can no longer cope with the prices of imported drugs, vaccines, among others. He said, “Death will occur not because of an undiagnosed disease but because they cannot afford the cost of the treatment.”.

The governor’s call to action comes at a time when the country is grappling with various challenges that require innovative and sustainable solutions, and the North-eastern University has the potential to play a crucial role in addressing these challenges by leveraging local knowledge, resources, and expertise to develop solutions that are tailored to the specific needs of the Nigerian population."
