RSU Celebrates Dr. Emmanuel Ovundah Nyeche’s Selection for 2026 World Heart Federation Emerging Leaders Programme

Rivers State University, RSU, has celebrated the selection of Dr. Emmanuel Ovundah Nyeche, Consultant Physician and Cardiologist at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, RSUTH, and Lecturer in the College of Medical Sciences, as one of 25 emerging cardiovascular leaders selected globally for the 2026 World Heart Federation, WHF, Salim Yusuf Emerging Leaders Programme.

Dr. Nyeche’s selection into the prestigious international programme, which brings together promising cardiovascular leaders from around the world, was formally recognised by the University on Friday, September 11, 2026, when he was received by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi.

Receiving Dr. Nyeche, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated him on the achievement, noting that the accomplishments of professionals working within the University’s teaching hospital also reflect positively on the institution and its commitment to excellence.

Professor Zeb-Obipi commended Dr. Nyeche for making the University, the Teaching Hospital and the wider academic and medical community proud. He described the recognition as a testament to the quality of mentorship, dedication and professional development within the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor also reaffirmed the University’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for staff to excel professionally. He disclosed that steps were being taken to ensure that doctors whose pay points are domiciled in the University receive the appropriate academic salaries and allowances alongside their clinical allowances. He added that efforts were also underway to improve the payment process through a one-stop software system.

Professor Zeb-Obipi emphasised that individual accomplishments should be celebrated as institutional achievements, noting that recognising such successes would inspire other members of the University community to strive for excellence.

He particularly commended the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH and the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences for their roles in mentoring Dr. Nyeche, from his days as a medical student through his development as a Consultant and Lecturer.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Professor Chizindu Alikor, congratulated Dr. Nyeche, noting that the recognition represents an important milestone in his professional career while also bringing international visibility to the University and the Teaching Hospital.

Also speaking, the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Professor Kenneth Ordu, described the honour as a product of the strong academic and clinical collaboration between the College of Medical Sciences and the Teaching Hospital.

The World Heart Federation Salim Yusuf Emerging Leaders Programme was established in 2014 by renowned cardiologist and former WHF President, Professor Salim Yusuf, with the objective of developing a global network of cardiovascular experts committed to reducing premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases.

The programme is designed to equip emerging leaders with advanced knowledge and skills in cardiovascular health policy, health systems strengthening, implementation science, research, advocacy and professional leadership. It also provides opportunities for mentorship, international networking, collaborative research, and engagement with policymakers and other key stakeholders.

Selection into the programme is highly competitive, with only 25 emerging cardiovascular leaders chosen each year from applicants worldwide. Candidates are assessed on the basis of their academic and professional accomplishments, leadership potential, creativity, commitment to cardiovascular health, and demonstrated capacity to make long-term contributions to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease.

The 2026 programme is scheduled to take place in Florence, Italy, from November 30 to December 3, 2026, in collaboration with the Menarini Foundation. It will focus on the theme, "Integrated Care of Cardiovascular Disease and Multiple Long-Term Conditions."

The 2026 cohort comprises 25 emerging cardiovascular leaders from 16 countries across all six World Health Organization regions.

Since its establishment, the programme has contributed to the development of professionals working on major cardiovascular health priorities, including hypertension, secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, tobacco prevention and control, access to essential cardiovascular medicines, stroke and heart failure.

Dr. Emmanuel Ovundah Nyeche, one of the two Nigerians selected for the 2026 World Heart Federation Salim Yusuf Emerging Leaders Programme, is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians in Cardiology. He is actively involved in clinical cardiology, cardiovascular education, research, and health advocacy. His professional interests include preventive, sports and interventional cardiology, while his work also extends to mentorship, medical education and the strengthening of cardiovascular services.
