Sa'adu Zungur University Hosts Public Lecture on Cybersecurity Awareness

Sa'adu Zungur University, SAZU, through The Premier Chambers of the Faculty of Law, Misau Campus, has successfully organised a public lecture focused on cybersecurity, with the aim of promoting digital safety, strengthening awareness of cybercrime, and examining Nigeria's legal framework for addressing emerging cyber threats.

The lecture, held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, was themed "Cybersecurity in the Digital Age: Combating Cybercrime Through Law, Awareness, and Enforcement." The event brought together legal practitioners, security professionals, academics, students, and other stakeholders to deliberate on practical strategies for ensuring a secure digital environment through legal reforms, public education, and effective law enforcement.

The Vice Chancellor of Sa'adu Zungur University, Professor Fatimah Tahir, who graced the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour, described the lecture as both timely and significant, considering the increasing sophistication of cybercrime and the growing dependence on digital technology. She encouraged students and other participants to utilise the knowledge gained in fostering responsible online behaviour and contributing to a safer cyberspace.

Professor Tahir further praised The Premier Chambers for organising the programme, noting that such initiatives enrich academic learning by exposing students to contemporary legal and societal issues beyond the classroom.

In his welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Chief Host, Professor Saleh M. G. Kanam, commended the organisers for initiating the lecture. He emphasised that the programme serves as a bridge between legal theory and practical realities while expressing appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for her unwavering commitment to academic excellence and student development.

The lecture was facilitated by senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Bauchi State Command: DSP Kawu Ibrahim Mu'azu, Esq., representing the Commissioner of Police, and ASP Muhammad Awwal El-Usman, Esq. The resource persons highlighted Nigeria's legal mechanisms for combating cybercrime, investigative procedures, the role of digital evidence, and the importance of public awareness and collaboration in preventing cyber-related offences.

A question and answer session followed the presentations, providing students with the opportunity to engage the speakers on issues such as online fraud, identity theft, data protection, digital evidence, and the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies in tackling cybercrime.

The event was attended by members of the Faculty Board, academic staff, students, and other invited guests, reaffirming Sa'adu Zungur University's commitment to advancing practical legal education, promoting intellectual engagement, and developing innovative solutions to contemporary societal challenges.
