UDUS Final-Year Sociology Students Celebrate Garri Day, Reflect on Four Years of Unity

The 400-Level Sociology students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, UDUS, popularly known as the Social Savvy Class of '26, gathered on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at exactly 10:00 a.m. to celebrate their much-anticipated Garri Day. The event brought together members of the class in a remarkable display of unity, friendship, and shared memories.

Though centered around the humble meal of garri, the occasion transcended a simple social gathering, becoming a heartfelt celebration of resilience, togetherness, and the journey the students have shared from their first year on campus to their final year of study.

Speaking with Pen Press, the Class Representative, Abdulkarem Faisal Nasco, explained that the inspiration behind Garri Day was to celebrate the class's collective achievements, appreciate the challenges they had overcome, and create lasting memories before graduation.

"The idea behind Garri Day was to celebrate ourselves, appreciate our journey from 100 Level to our final year, and create memories that will remain with us long after graduation," he said.

Faisal further noted that the event provided an opportunity for classmates to laugh together, reminisce about their experiences, take photographs, share meals, and strengthen the friendships they had built over the years.

According to him, garri, though regarded as a simple meal, carries a deeper significance for many students.

"Garri may be simple, but it reminds us of the struggles, sacrifices, and unforgettable moments we experienced throughout our university journey. It symbolises resilience, friendship, and the determination that has brought us this far," he added.

Also speaking with Pen Press, the Assistant Class Representative, Abdulmumin Ridwanullahi, described the event as more than just a social gathering, emphasizing that it reflected the strong bond that exists among members of the Social Savvy Class of '26.

He stated that Garri Day served as a reminder that they had grown beyond being ordinary classmates into a family united by shared experiences, mutual support, and collective victories.

"It reminded us that we are not just course mates but a family that has grown together through challenges and victories. As we prepare to leave the university, the memories we have created will remain in our hearts forever," he said.

Ridwanullahi further expressed optimism about the future of the graduating class, describing the Social Savvy Class of '26 as a body strengthened by friendship, enriched by experience, and prepared to make meaningful contributions to society. He concluded with a heartfelt wish that the bond established during their years at the university would continue to flourish wherever life may lead them.
