UDUS Researcher Dr. Aminu Shittu Hits 30,000 Citations Milestone

For Dr. Aminu Shittu, a distinguished lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), academic success is measured by the real-world relevance of data rather than the prestige of recognition. However, his recent achievement—surpassing 30,000 citations on ResearchGate—has firmly established him as one of Nigeria’s most influential scientific voices.

A native of Gusau, Zamfara State, Dr. Shittu’s journey began on his grandfather's farm, where his fascination with livestock and biology took root. After earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from UDUS in 2004, he honed his practical skills as a veterinary officer before transitioning into the rigorous world of quantitative epidemiology.

Reflecting on his milestone, Dr. Shittu described the 30,000 citations as a "humbling" reflection of "years of collaboration, mentorship, and a shared commitment to advancing science and public health."

Dr. Shittu’s work focuses on the mechanics of disease spread and control. His expertise in infection dynamics and advanced statistical modeling serves as a bridge between theoretical research and practical disease prevention.

His research methodology was sharpened through international training at the University of Edinburgh and the University of London (2008–2009), where he analyzed national datasets on bovine tuberculosis in Great Britain. This experience cemented his belief that evidence-based research is the most potent tool for addressing public health challenges.

According to the AD Scientific Index, Dr. Shittu currently holds the 58th position in Nigeria for Medical, Health, and Veterinary Sciences. While he remains modest about rankings, his influence is undeniable.

He is now focused on expanding his impact through a new collaboration with the University of Glasgow. This partnership aims to strengthen international research ties and enhance postgraduate supervision, further building academic capacity within Nigeria.

Despite the accolades, Dr. Shittu remains dedicated to his role as a mentor at UDUS. He is a vocal advocate for accessible science, frequently emphasizing that research must transcend academic journals to reach policymakers and practitioners.

“It’s not just about reaching milestones,” Dr. Shittu noted, “but about sustaining impact and contributing to knowledge that improves lives.”
