UNILAG Senate Holds Valedictory Session for Retiring Professors Udeani and Oghojafor
In a session marked by academic tradition and high regard, the Senate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, officially honoured two distinguished scholars as they retired from active university service.
The valedictory session celebrated the illustrious careers of Professor Uche Nkiruka Udeani and Professor Ben Emukufia Akpoyomare Oghojafor, acknowledging their decades of commitment to research, teaching, and institutional development.
Both professors have left an indelible mark on the University of Lagos and the broader Nigerian academic landscape:
Professor Uche Nkiruka Udeani: A Professor of Science Education, she served in several key administrative roles, including as the Director of the Distance Learning Institute (DLI), where she pioneered several initiatives to expand access to flexible higher education.
Professor Ben E. A. Oghojafor: A Professor of Strategic and General Management, he is a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services). He is widely respected for his contributions to the Faculty of Management Sciences and his role in streamlining university administrative processes.
Members of the Senate, led by the Vice-Chancellor, took turns to laud the retirees for their mentorship and leadership. The session underscored that while they are transitioning into the status of Professor Emeritus or retirement, their intellectual contributions will continue to serve as a blueprint for the "University of First Choice."
The event concluded with the presentation of commemorative gifts and a formal "bowing out" ceremony, symbolizing the successful completion of their statutory service to the institution.
