The University of Maiduguri Language Centre, in collaboration with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), organised a two-day workshop to enhance participants’ understanding of the role of language in conflict resolution and humanitarian response.

Held at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre, the workshop brought together language professionals, journalists, and humanitarian workers to improve translation and interpretation skills in conflict-affected regions.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services), Professor Mohammed Ahmed Waziri, highlighted the critical importance of accurate translation and interpretation in delivering effective humanitarian and conflict reporting. He reaffirmed UNIMAID’s commitment to supporting development in the North East region.

Professor Jidda Hassan Juma’a, Director of the Language Centre, emphasized that language can either escalate conflict or foster peace, underscoring the timeliness of the workshop. He thanked the University Management, facilitators, and partners for their support and collaboration.

The guest speaker, Professor Nuhu Dariso Gapsiso from the Department of Mass Communication, presented on the role of translation and interpretation in conflict, humanitarian, and medical aid reporting, addressing challenges, best practices, and the significance of accurate and timely information in conflict environments.
