UNIMED Mourns Professor Folayan Esan, Nigeria’s First Professor of Haematology
The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, has mourned the passing of Professor Folayan George Esan, FAS, an iconic scholar, medical pioneer and distinguished elder, who died at the age of 87.

The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, has mourned the passing of Professor Folayan George Esan, FAS, an iconic scholar, medical pioneer and distinguished elder, who died at the age of 87.
Professor Esan, Nigeria’s first Professor of Haematology, Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science and a foundation member of the Governing Council of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), lived a life defined by intellectual excellence, service and an enduring commitment to humanity.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, described his passing as “a deeply painful loss to the University, the medical profession and the nation.”
She said Professor Esan was a giant whose wisdom, scholarship and service helped illuminate the path for generations, adding that his legacy would continue to live on through the lives he touched and the institutions he helped build.
UNIMED said it remembers with gratitude a remarkable life of service and excellence and extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and loved ones.
The University also prayed that his noble soul would rest in perfect peace.
