On November 4, 2024, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, sought the support of state security agencies to enhance campus safety amid rising security challenges in the country.

The University of Ibadan (UI), Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale has called for the collaboration of state security agencies. During a series of courtesy visits on Monday, the VC engaged with key security officials, emphasizing the pressing need for a unified approach to combat the escalating security challenges in the country.

Professor Adebowale's delegation included representatives from the university, who met with General O. G. Onubogu, the General Officer Commanding 2 Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army; Ayodele Sonubi, the Commissioner of Police; and Mr. Rasheed Adeyinka Adelakun, the Director of the Department of State Services.

Highlighting the multifaceted nature of current security threats, Adebowale urged security agencies to bolster their protective measures for the university. He stressed that a combined effort from both the academic and security sectors is essential to maintain law and order within the community.

The VC expressed gratitude for the past support received from security agencies, which has been instrumental during both peaceful times and instances of unrest on campus. "The challenges we face are indeed hydra-headed, and it requires our concerted efforts to tackle them effectively," he stated.

In response, General Onubogu commended the Vice-Chancellor for his initiative in reaching out to the military, while Commissioner Sonubi acknowledged the vital role the academia plays in providing educational opportunities for members of the police force. Director Adelakun assured the university of the commitment to enhance the organization’s services and support in safeguarding the institution.
