The VARSITY CUP, a unique gender inclusive footballing initiative has drawn attention for its unique structure, focusing solely on football in a format inspired by the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) but akin to a "Champions League" for Nigerian universities. In an exclusive interview with MYSCHOOLNEWS, Mr. Dapo Olarenwaju, Marketing Manager of the VARSITY CUP, explained the competition's origins and the intensive planning involved. “We took the NUGA games’ idea but zoomed in on the football aspect, creating a platform where students can showcase their talent in a national league setting,” Olarenwaju noted. He also credited key sponsors Moniepoint and Minimie for making the event a reality.

The standout performance of the match came from UNN's Chuzie Henry, who was crowned Man of the Match following an impressive display that helped secure the Lions' victory. Henry’s efforts did not go unrewarded; he received a cash prize of ₦100,000 from Moniepoint, recognizing his exceptional contribution on the field.

Looking ahead, the UNN Lions are set to travel to Ilorin for the second leg of the semi-final, where the UNILORIN Warriors will aim to turn the tables on home ground. With both teams vying for a spot in the final, the next match promises to be another thrilling encounter in the VARSITY CUP’s quest to crown the best football team in Nigerian university sports.
