The Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University Okada, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, has commended the university’s founder for the vision and dedication that led to the establishment of Nigeria’s first private university. Speaking at the institution’s 27th Founders Day ceremony and lecture themed “Keeping the University Dream in a Fragile Ecosystem,” he described the university as a pioneer that helped shape Nigeria’s private university sector.

The Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University Okada, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, has praised the institution’s founder for his foresight, courage, and unwavering commitment to establishing Nigeria’s first private university.

Prof. Ezemonye made the remarks during the university’s 27th Founders Day ceremony and lecture, themed *“Keeping the University Dream in a Fragile Ecosystem.”* The lecture was delivered by Dr. Sam Ikoku.

According to the vice-chancellor, the founder’s bold initiative laid the foundation for what has grown into one of Nigeria’s most respected private universities, recognized for promoting knowledge, leadership, and academic excellence.

“Founders Day offers us an opportunity not only to celebrate our achievements but also to reflect on the vision, sacrifices, and determination that laid the foundation of this great institution,” Prof. Ezemonye said.

He noted that Igbinedion University Okada was established at a time when private universities were virtually non-existent in Nigeria, describing the institution as a trailblazer that paved the way for the country’s rapidly expanding private university sector.

The vice-chancellor highlighted that Nigeria now boasts more than 160 private universities, a development he said reflects the impact and pioneering role of IUO in the nation’s educational landscape.

Prof. Ezemonye also expressed appreciation to key stakeholders whose contributions have supported the institution’s growth and success over the years. He specifically acknowledged Deputy Chancellor and former Edo State Governor Lucky Igbinedion, Chairman of the Governing Council Ahmed Tijani Mora, council members, management staff, alumni, and students.

The event attracted prominent personalities, including Lucky Igbinedion and Dr. Sam Ikoku, Chairman and CEO of the Sam Ikoku Group.
