Abakaliki Catholic Diocese Announces Ambitious Development Plans Including a Catholic University
During the golden jubilee celebration of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki at St. Theresa Cathedral, Abakaliki, Bishop Chukwu outlined the primary objective of these developments—to provide quality education for young people, addressing societal issues and mitigating cultism.
The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki is poised for significant advancements with plans to establish a Catholic University, hospitals, a School of Nursing, and more, as disclosed by Most Rev. Dr. Peter Chukwu, the Catholic Bishop Diocese of Abakaliki.
During the golden jubilee celebration of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki at St. Theresa Cathedral, Abakaliki, Bishop Chukwu outlined the primary objective of these developments—to provide quality education for young people, addressing societal issues and mitigating cultism.

The proposed developments include the creation of a School of Midwifery, Bishop Michael Okoro School of Health Care Technology, and the transformation of the existing Nursing school into a college of Nursing conferring HND qualifications.
Bishop Chukwu took the opportunity to call on the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) to expedite the process of establishing a new Diocese in the state. Since its inception in 1973, the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki has given rise to numerous parishes and is now due for the creation of a new Diocese.

Expressing concern about the lack of additional Dioceses in Ebonyi State compared to other states in the South East, Bishop Chukwu urged CBCN to address this imbalance. He highlighted the necessity of a new Diocese to bring the church closer to the people, citing the considerable distances priests currently travel for pastoral visits.
Governor Francis Nwifuru expressed joy at the growth of the Diocese and encouraged priests to positively represent its image. The event saw the presence of various Catholic Archbishops, Bishops, Governor Francis Nwifuru, former Governor Martin Elechi, and other distinguished personalities.
