ABU Assumes Presidency of International Institute of Online Education (IIOE)

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, Kaduna State, has taken on the presidency role of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) for the year 2024. The announcement was made during the IIOE Global Partners Summit held in Shenzhen, China, from December 7 to December 9, 2023. ABU now succeeds University Putra Malaysia (UPM) as the rotating presidency unit.

The IIOE presidency, a pivotal role in the governance structure since its establishment in 2019, rotates annually among partner universities across different regions. ABU, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof Kabiru Bala, is expected to collaborate with UNESCO-ICHEI and the IIOE secretariat. This collaboration aims to provide strategic guidance and support for the development of IIOE and the digital transformation of higher education in various regions.

Expressing his commitment, Prof Bala, in his acceptance speech, stated that ABU is honored to serve as the IIOE Rotating Presidency Unit for 2024. He emphasized their dedication to moving the institute forward and expanding the IIOE network by onboarding more Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The rotating presidency has previously been held by Ain Shams University, Egypt (2020); University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan (2021); University of Nairobi, Kenya (2022); and Universiti Putra Malaysia (2023).
