AE-FUNAI Expands Academic Offerings with New Medical Programmes
Prof. Sunday O. Elom

In a significant move aimed at broadening its academic horizons and providing increased admission opportunities, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) in Ebonyi State is set to introduce new medical programmes in the upcoming academic session. These programs include Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and Human Nutrition & Dietetics.

The decision to establish these para-medical programmes comes as a strategic response to the growing demand for admission into MBBS and other related medical courses at the university. AE-FUNAI has witnessed a surge in applications for its MBBS program, which has already advanced to the clinical stage. This popularity, coupled with the program's competitive nature, has prompted the university to diversify its offerings.

Prof. Sunday O. Elom, the Vice-Chancellor of AE-FUNAI, emphasized the importance of creating more opportunities for aspiring medical students who may not secure admission into the highly competitive Medicine & Surgery program. He stated, "We need more of these programmes to cater to the needs of those who cannot make it to MBBS, and more importantly, because of the programs' significance in the development of Nigerian society."

The move to introduce these para-medical programs aligns with the university's commitment to meeting the demands of the Nigerian populace and addressing the nation's healthcare challenges. Prof. Elom reiterated the importance of these programs, citing their high demand and potential benefits.

A National Universities Commission (NUC) Resource Verification Team recently visited the university to assess the readiness and suitability of AE-FUNAI for offering these programs. Prof. Mohammed Idris, speaking on behalf of the Resource Verification Teams, commended the university's decision to expand its academic offerings. He emphasized that the NUC plays a crucial role in promoting quality assurance and supporting universities in Nigeria by employing peer-review mechanisms to enhance the quality of academic activities.

The establishment of these new para-medical programs is a significant milestone for AE-FUNAI and underscores the institution's commitment to providing diverse educational opportunities. The move is expected to meet the aspirations of prospective students and contribute to addressing the healthcare needs of the nation.

The decision to introduce these programs was first proposed by the Vice-Chancellor in 2021 during his inaugural address to the University Senate. It represents the realization of a vision that will benefit both the university and future students seeking careers in the medical field.
