Armed Robbers Raid University of Ibadan Hostel, Steal Valuables and Injure Students

Armed robbers stormed the Awolowo Hall of Residence at the University of Ibadan (UI) in the early hours of Saturday, looting students’ belongings and inflicting injuries during a hours-long invasion. The assailants carted away mobile phones, jewelry, clothing, and other valuables worth thousands of naira, leaving traumatized students in their wake.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the robbers not only stole items but also physically assaulted students. A survivor, who requested anonymity, disclosed, “They tortured many of us while ransacking rooms. It was a nightmare that lasted for hours.” Another source noted that the university’s security team intervened after hearing distressed screams, prompting a swift but delayed response.
Following the alert, security personnel apprehended several suspects, who were later handed over to the Sango Police Station for further investigation. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Joke Akinpelu, confirmed the incident, stating, “Reports from hall wardens indicate that the robbers targeted students’ phones and personal effects.”
Efforts to obtain details from the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, were unsuccessful as of press time. Meanwhile, the arrested suspects remain in custody at Sango Police Station, with authorities expected to release further updates.
The brazen attack has sparked concerns over safety within student accommodations. Awolowo Hall residents expressed frustration over recurring security lapses, urging the university management to bolster surveillance and patrols. “This isn’t the first time hostels have been targeted. We need better protection,” a student lamented.
While Akinpelu acknowledged the thefts, the institution has not yet issued a formal statement on measures to prevent future incidents. Students and parents await reassurances as the community grapples with the aftermath of the invasion.
Authorities are probing the robbery’s circumstances, including how the armed group accessed the hostel. The incident underscores growing anxieties about campus safety amid Nigeria’s broader security challenges.
