UNIZIK Bans Final-Year ‘Signing-Off’ Activities, Warns of Rustication and Prosecution

The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has with immediate effect banned all forms of orchestration, celebration and “signing-off” activities by final-year students within the University premises and campuses in connection with final examinations.

The directive was contained in an internal memorandum signed by the University Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke.

According to the Management, the decision was prompted by recurring incidents of chaos, violence, vandalism and disruption of academic and administrative activities associated with such events.

Management also expressed concern over the infiltration of unauthorised persons into the University campus during the activities, noting that their presence poses a serious threat to the safety and security of students, staff and University property.

The University Management stated that, in fulfilment of its statutory responsibility to maintain order, protect lives and safeguard property, such activities are considered unacceptable and constitute a breach of University regulations.

Management warned that any violation of the directive would attract serious sanctions, including rustication and withdrawal from the University in accordance with the Students’ Handbook.

It further warned that culprits, including external persons involved in the prohibited activities, risk arrest and prosecution in line with extant laws and regulations.

Deans, Heads of Departments, Academic Advisers, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and all other stakeholders have been directed to ensure the effective implementation of the directive and strict compliance by members of the University community.
