AFUED VC Charges Newly Inaugurated Student Union Leaders on Responsible Leadership

Speaking at the inauguration of the Comrade James Friday-led Students’ Union Government (SUG) executive on Monday, November 24, 2025, Prof. Popoola emphasized the importance of integrity, vision, and commitment in student leadership. He described the student union as a strategic partner of the University in promoting welfare, peace, unity, and academic excellence, noting that the new leaders’ roles require diligence, inclusivity, and sound judgment.
He further encouraged the leaders to embrace humility, transparency, accountability, and selfless service, stating, “Engage constructively, listen attentively, and ensure that every student feels seen, heard, and represented. The elections are over; now is the time for governance. Students’ unionism is about service and positive leadership, not personal gain.”

The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Justina Ogboru, welcomed attendees and praised the outgoing SUG President, Comrade Aniefiok Gideon, for his leadership, while urging the new executive to see their positions as a call to service, leaving memorable impacts on the University community. She also commended students who participated in the election for their courage.
Outgoing SUG President Comrade Gideon expressed gratitude to the University management, his team, and students for their support. The new SUG President, Comrade James Friday, thanked students for their trust and promised to continue initiatives started by his predecessor, focusing on academic welfare, collaboration, educational social activities, and entrepreneurship.
Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, while the ceremony, held at Babatunde Ipaye Lecture Theatre, was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ireti Folasade Alao; University Librarian, Dr. Azino Akpokurerie; the Vice-Chancellor’s wife, Dr. (Mrs.) C.J. Popoola; and other university dignitaries, staff, parents, and students.
