AKSU Partners Gender Mobile Initiative in the Fight Against Sexual Harassment

Akwa Ibom State University, in collaboration with the Gender Mobile Initiative, held a one-day Town Hall meeting on the theme: "Making AKSU a Safe Learning and Working Environment" to sensitise students about the campaign against Gender Sexual Harassment May 15, 2024, at the Tetfund Pavilion1, Main Campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nse U. Essien, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ita Ewa-Oboho, congratulated the event planners for organising an enlightening event for students to gain more knowledge on tackling sexual harassment, a serious threat in our immediate society.

During his address, Prof. Oboho emphasised the University Management's zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment and the measures implemented to curb it in all facets of the school environment. He encouraged affected persons to speak up and report sexual harassment issues to the appropriate authorities, aiming to foster a University environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and empowered to thrive.

Dr. Eme Imah, the Acting Director of Gender Affairs at Akwa Ibom State University, in her opening remarks, highlighted that sexual harassment is not just an issue affecting individuals but also undermines the Institution's strategic fabric, eroding trust, dignity, and equality. She emphasised the collective responsibility in creating a safe and respectful University environment for learning and working, urging everyone to uphold the principles of respect, dignity and equity.

Barr. Joyce Odabi, the Technical and Executive Director of Gender Mobile Initiative, conducted an interactive session with the students, facilitated discussions and shared knowledge about sexual harassment. She gave room for questions and answers during her lecture and concluded with a short video on tackling sexual harassment issues.

The Research and Policy Lead, Barr. Feyi Kadiri, introduced the "CampusPal" App, encouraged students to download and sign up. The application is designed for confidential reporting of sexual harassment issues online, providing onboarding information and facilitating social interaction.

The event also featured a raffle draw where students won valuable gift items.
